Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 box German chocolate cake mix
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
  • Extra pecans or coconut for garnish
  • Chocolate shavings and fresh mint leaves for decoration

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking pan.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the cake mix, water, vegetable oil, and eggs. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes until well blended.
  3. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Let cool for at least 20 minutes.
  4. Poke holes in the cooled cake using the handle of a wooden spoon, spaced about an inch apart.
  5. Pour sweetened condensed milk evenly over the cake to fill all holes.
  6. For frosting: In a saucepan over medium heat, combine evaporated milk, sugar, egg yolks, and butter. Stir continuously until thickened, then remove from heat and stir in shredded coconut and chopped nuts (if using).
  7. Spread frosting generously over the cake once it has cooled slightly.
  8. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours before serving.
