  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 1 small onion, minced
  • 1 garlic clove, grated
  • 1 tsp fresh thyme, chopped or 1/2 tsp dried thyme
  • 3 tbsp flour (use gluten-free if desired)
  • 1 1/2 cups milk or substitute heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup shredded gruyere cheese
  • 1 pinch ground nutmeg (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 4 lb potatoes, sliced thin
  • 1 cup shredded gruyere cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Sauté minced onion until translucent, then add grated garlic and thyme.
  3. Sprinkle flour over the onion mixture, stirring well. Gradually whisk in milk until smooth and slightly thickened. Season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg if desired.
  4. In a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes, half of the cream sauce, and half of the cheese. Repeat layers with remaining ingredients.
  5. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes until golden brown.
